![]() ![]() ![]() The words used by Jess typify a poorer country setting, and give the reader instant insight into what he thinks in his head. The language used by Paterson paints a beautiful picture and it is possible to imagine everything in your head. Jess's drawing is something that makes him unique, and you find yourself longing for him to be successful, and be able to break out of the rut of his life. She paints Jess sympathetically, and I feel like she really remembers what it was like to be a child. Paterson captures the childish pleasure in playing with your friends beautfiully. I feel like this doesn't capture the book's essence at all - if you're curious (and feel up to being immersed in a childish consciousness) read it yourself! It is marred though as the outside world demands more of their attention. It's perfect for them, where they can escape from their problems. Jess and Leslie are making their own secret world, where no one else can find them. For more recent reviews by me, please hop over there. So glad I did.“All You Perfects” is about a couple and their marriage. I kept an open mind because I hadn’t read enough of her books to really decide if I like her writing style or not. ![]() So I wasn’t holding out much hope for “All You Perfects”. I recently had a discussion with my sister-in-law about Hoover and she, also a big fan, said oh check out “it Ends With Us’ and you will change your mind! I had to tell her that I gave it 2 stars. Most people I had talked to were huge fans of Hoover’s writing. I did not enjoy “It Ends With Us” (please feel free to check out my review) even though it received a high rating. All opinions are my own and independent of receiving an advanced copy.So I was not the biggest Colleen Hoover fan. My thanks to Netgalley, Simon and Schuster Canada, Atria Books, and Colleen Hoover for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review. ![]() ![]() ![]() In His sweeping depiction of kingdom citizenship, Jesus utters some of the most familiar passages in all of Scripture. Both practical and profound, the sermon asks of us the same questions it posed to its original hearers: How should a disciple relate to sin? To others? To the Law? How does a disciple think, speak, and act? What is the nature of true righteousness? It was a message intended to turn upside down every expectation His closest followers might have. What does it mean to be a citizen of the kingdom of Heaven? Matthew’s gospel opens with three chapters containing Jesus’ longest recorded message – a sermon given to His disciples early in His ministry to articulate what the life of a Christ-follower would look like. But Genome also carries a deeper social message, which may explain why Ridley has critics he is a libertarian in a genome community that contains many statists. I gave a copy to an old classmate of mine, now an orthopaedic surgeon, and he loves it. This is the book to give to an intelligent person who knows something about life science, even if that knowledge is outdated or rudimentary, and who would enjoy accessing modern molecular biology without struggling through northern blots or X-ray diffractions. In fact, this book brings up a couple of stories I have about churches, so I should probably say as a disclaimer that Gaudy Night is not religious at all in its topic, but deals mostly with the role of women in society. I say all of this because the ultimate falling-out I had with the pastor of that church reflects the central conflict of the great and wonderful mystery story, Gaudy Night, so I’m going to use this review as a venue to air my grievances, which will hopefully be entertaining enough that you can bear with me.
